Auto insurance written at limits that clear a real loss

Liability, comprehensive and collision are three different coverages that happen to share a policy. We write all three, and we write uninsured motorist to match.

What the policy pays for

State minimum limits have not kept pace with the cost of a hospital stay or a late-model pickup. We write auto at limits that actually clear a serious loss, and we write uninsured motorist to match, because roughly one driver in eight on an Ohio road carries nothing at all.

Bodily injury liability100/300 to 500/500
Pays other people when you are at fault. The first figure caps any one person, the second caps everyone hurt in that accident.
Property damage liability$50,000 to $250,000
Pays for the other vehicle, the guardrail, the storefront. Ohio requires $25,000, which one late-model pickup can exhaust.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist100/300 to 500/500
Pays you when the at-fault driver has nothing, or not enough. Roughly one driver in eight on an Ohio road carries no liability at all.
Comprehensive$250 to $1,000 deductible
Your own vehicle, for anything that is not a collision: hail, theft, fire, a deer, a limb through the roof.
Collision$250 to $1,000 deductible
Your own vehicle when it strikes something, regardless of fault. Waived on the not-at-fault side once we subrogate successfully.
Medical payments$5,000 to $25,000
Medical bills for you and your passengers, no fault question asked, paid ahead of any liability determination.

State minimums were set to make insurance affordable, not to make you whole.

Every figure in the left column below is legal. None of them will clear a serious accident. The average new vehicle transaction price in the United States is now well above $48,000, which means a $5,000 or $10,000 property damage limit can be exhausted by one pickup truck before a single person has been to a hospital.

We will write a policy at the state minimum if you ask us to, and we will put in writing that we advised against it.

SR-22 and FR-44 filings

An SR-22 is not insurance. It is a certificate we file with your state confirming that you carry at least the minimum liability the court or the registry requires. We file electronically in every state where we write personal auto, usually the same business day, and there is no filing fee on top of the premium.

Filing time

Same business day

Filed electronically once the policy is bound and the first premium clears.

Typical period

3 years

Set by the court or the state, not by us. The clock only runs while the policy is in force.

Lapse notification

Automatic

We are required to notify the state if the policy lapses, which restarts the period.

Non-owner filings

Available

For drivers who need the certificate but do not currently own a vehicle.

What it will not pay for

Every policy sold in the United States has exclusions. The difference between carriers is whether you find out now or on the day of the loss. These are the ones that actually catch people out on this form.

  • Wear, tear, mechanical breakdown and freezing, which are maintenance, not perils.
  • Vehicles used for delivery or ride-hailing while the app is on, unless a commercial endorsement is attached.
  • Racing or any organised speed contest, on a track or otherwise.
  • Damage to a vehicle you own but did not list on the policy.

Endorsements worth attaching

An endorsement changes the policy. These are the ones we recommend often enough that they are priced into the bundle tiers rather than sold as extras.

Rental reimbursement

$40 - $75 / day

A vehicle while yours is in a shop after a covered loss.

Roadside and towing

Included on IM-2 up

Tow, jump, lockout and fuel delivery, without a claim being opened.

Original equipment parts

IM-3

Repairs specified in manufacturer parts rather than aftermarket equivalents.

Gap coverage

New vehicles
