Umbrella liability that attaches exactly where your other policies stop

An umbrella pays nothing until the underlying policy is exhausted. That single fact is why it is the cheapest liability limit a household can buy.

What the policy pays for

An umbrella is the cheapest liability limit you will ever buy, because it only starts paying once the underlying policy is exhausted. The price depends almost entirely on how high those underlying limits already sit, which is why we quote them together.

Excess auto liabilityAbove 250/500/100
Picks up where the auto policy stops. A $900,000 judgment against a 250/500/100 policy leaves $650,000 for the umbrella.
Excess home liabilityAbove $500,000
The same structure over Coverage E on a homeowners, condo or renters policy.
Excess watercraft and recreational liabilityAbove $500,000
Boats, recreational vehicles and motorcycles, provided each underlying policy carries the required limit.
Personal injury liabilityFull umbrella limit
Libel, slander, false arrest and invasion of privacy, which most underlying policies exclude outright.
Defence costsOutside the limit
Legal defence is paid in addition to the limit, not deducted from it, so a long defence does not eat the coverage.

One judgment, worked through both policies

A court finds you liable for $900,000 in injuries to one person after an at-fault accident. Your auto policy is written at 250/500/100 and you carry a $1,000,000 umbrella. Nothing is paid twice and there is no gap between the two, because the attachment point and the underlying limit are the same number by design.

Raise the underlying auto limit and the umbrella layer gets thinner, so the umbrella gets cheaper as the auto policy gets slightly dearer. In most households the two moves very nearly cancel. That is why we will not quote an umbrella on its own.

What it will not pay for

Every policy sold in the United States has exclusions. The difference between carriers is whether you find out now or on the day of the loss. These are the ones that actually catch people out on this form.

  • Anything arising from a business you own, which needs a commercial umbrella above a business owner policy.
  • Intentional acts. An umbrella is for accidents and negligence, not for what you meant to do.
  • Damage to property in your own care, custody or control.
  • Any loss where the required underlying limit was not actually in force at the time.

Endorsements worth attaching

An endorsement changes the policy. These are the ones we recommend often enough that they are priced into the bundle tiers rather than sold as extras.

Uninsured motorist excess

Up to the limit

Extends the umbrella down over uninsured and underinsured motorist claims.

Non-profit board liability

Included

Volunteer board and committee service for a registered non-profit.

Rental dwelling schedule

Per property

Adds a rental property you own to the same umbrella, once its own policy meets the attach point.
