File a claim, and know exactly what happens next

Report it now

If anyone is hurt, or a property is unsafe, deal with that first and call us afterwards. Nothing about a claim is improved by being reported ten minutes sooner than it is safe to report it.

Field adjuster, catastrophe deployment

The whole process, in four moves

Report

Any hour

Call the claims line or file online. We open the claim on that first call and issue the claim number before you hang up. If the property is not habitable or a vehicle is not drivable, say so, because that changes the queue.

What we will need

  • Policy number, or the address and your name
  • Date, time and place of the loss
  • What was damaged, roughly
  • Photographs if you have them

Assign

Within 1 business day

A named adjuster takes the file and calls you. You get their direct line, not a queue. Total losses and habitability issues are assigned the same day. For catastrophe events we deploy field adjusters to the affected counties rather than waiting for appointments.

What we will need

  • A time we can inspect
  • Access to the property or vehicle
  • Any repair estimates you already hold

Inspect

2 to 5 business days

The adjuster inspects, scopes the damage and writes the estimate. You get a copy of the scope. If you disagree with it, say so then rather than after the cheque, because reopening a settled scope is slower than correcting an open one.

What we will need

  • Receipts or appraisals for scheduled items
  • The contractor estimate, if you have one

Settle

On agreement

We issue payment less the deductible. On a replacement cost policy the actual cash value comes first and the withheld depreciation is released once the work is invoiced. If a mortgage company is named on the policy, it is named on the cheque.

What we will need

  • Completed work invoice, for depreciation release
  • Mortgagee endorsement details, on a property claim

Claims questions

How fast does an adjuster contact me?

Claims intake is staffed 24 hours a day. An adjuster is assigned within one business day, and for a total loss or a habitability issue we assign the same day. You get the adjuster’s direct line, not a queue, and the claim number is issued at the end of the first call.

Can you file an SR-22 for me?

Yes, in every state where we are licensed for personal auto. An SR-22 is not insurance, it is a certificate we file with your state confirming you carry at least the minimum required liability. We file it electronically, usually the same business day, and we notify the state if the policy ever lapses, which is why the policy must stay in force for the full period the court set.

How do I check whether a carrier is any good before I buy?

Two public sources, neither of them us. The NAIC Consumer Information Source publishes a complaint index for every carrier, where 1.00 is the industry median and lower is better. AM Best publishes a financial strength rating that estimates the carrier’s ability to pay claims. Look both up for any carrier you are considering, including this one, before you sign anything.

One event, one deductible.

On an IM-2 or IM-3 bundle a single storm is a single claim, whatever it damaged. We apply the higher deductible and waive the other.
