When an umbrella attaches, and why your auto limits set the price

An umbrella pays only after the underlying policy is exhausted. That is why it is cheap, and why carriers require specific auto and home limits first.

A personal umbrella is the least understood and most efficient liability purchase available to a household. It is also the one most often quoted without explaining the mechanism that makes it inexpensive.

The attachment point

An umbrella does not pay from the first dollar. It sits above your auto and homeowners liability and only begins paying once those underlying limits are exhausted. The level at which it starts is the attachment point, and the carrier sets it as a condition of writing the policy.

Typical required underlying limits for a $1,000,000 umbrella

Auto bodily injury / property damage
250/500/100
Auto uninsured motorist
250/500
Home or renters personal liability
$500,000
Watercraft liability, if applicable
$500,000

Work a claim through it. A judgment of $900,000 against you for injuries in an at-fault accident. The auto policy pays its $250,000 per-person limit. The umbrella pays the next $650,000 and stops at its own $1,000,000 ceiling. Neither policy pays twice, and there is no gap between them because the attachment point and the underlying limit are the same number by design.

Why raising the auto limit lowers the umbrella price

The umbrella carrier is pricing the layer above the attachment point. Raise the attachment point and the layer gets thinner, so the umbrella gets cheaper even as the auto policy gets slightly dearer. In most households the two moves nearly cancel, which is why we will not quote an umbrella in isolation.

If you own a home, have a teenage driver, or hold a board seat at a local non-profit, an umbrella is normally the highest value line on the whole account. Run it alongside the auto quote rather than after it.
